Is there a way to check if certain immigration attorney is legitimate with all the education/credentials?

   Any attorney is registered with the bar of the state !.
   You can check up the credentials there !

   Depends on the state. Each state has an agency that licenses attorneys and they would have the info about if that person is in ‘good standing’ with his/her license. So you need to find out what organization in your state issues attorney licenses. It is not always bar associations. Some organizations have internet sites where you can see if an attorney has the proper license.

   For example in Illinois it is the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois (or ARDC). http://www.iardc.org.
