Is it possible or even legal to adopt a baby outside of an adoption agency?

i.e. with only an attorny and money given to the birth mother for expenses. My husband and I would like to adopt a baby and have K to give to the mother and will pay an attorney to do paperwork. We ONLY have the 10K though and adoption agencies will take a HUGE chunk of this leaving very little for the mother… IS this even legal?

Yes, many adoptions are arranged with birth parents via a lawyer for just that reason. The agencies take such big chunks.. .but thats not saying the lawyer doesn’t get his/her chunk too.

Yes it can be done and yes it is legal. It needs to be done with a lawyer and papers to terminate the birth parent’s rights so that the child is "freed".

Yes it is legal, I’m hoping to do the same thing. as long as an attorney does the legal paperwork and files everything it is legal. Just be careful about the money, it has to be handled thru your attorney, and can only go towards certain expenses. If not it looks like you are buying the baby, and that makes it illegal. I’m hoping to find a situation where I can do this, it’s hard to find someone willing to give up their baby that hasn’t already signed with an agency, and once they are with an agency it’s a lot more expensive. $15,000-40,000 in the US. Yes that’s how my parents adopted me and are trying to adopt again.All you have to pay is the court fees and possibly pay the mothers medical bills (most get a chips or medical card though). It’s not legal though for you to just give the mother money you must have a legit reason.That’s considered buying a baby which is illegal.
if you are working on a lower budget, you can contact your local foster care agency. these adoptions are often low or no cost, and the state covers the legal part. although i reccomend you having your own attorney anyway. yes it is possible to find a birthmother on your own, but be so very very careful. many women will try to scam desperate adoptive parents. you pay their expenses and then they decide to parent. not that all birthmothers deciding to parent are scammers, just usually the ones the prey on proscective adoptive parents without an agency involved. you are setting yourself up for heartache, and big money loss doing this. as sad as this is, often an african american adoption can be done through and attorney and agency for under 10k. many agencies will forfit their fees or significantly reduce them just to place the child. it’s sad these children have to be placed on sale so to say. but if it’s your child and you love them and they are your own, then what does it matter? let them know they’re adopted, they don’t need to know what their going rate was. my friend is in the middle of a caucasion/african american adoption of a girl, who’s due to be born into this world in march. her total expense, with the attorney, agency, and other legals and birthmother expenses is going to be just under 8k. it can be done. contact me if you’d like the name of the agency. they placed our daughter with us last jan. she is hispanic/caucasion. they are legit and just wonderful. my attorney and social worker are the best around. each state has their own laws and fees, so it depends on where you live, but mainly on where the baby is born. the wait with this agency has been under 48 hours for myself and my friend with being matched with birthmothers. and they are in the last trimester of their pregnancy. best to you.
