   There is a lot involved, as pointed out by the first answer.

   However, if everything else is in place [home study, all State requirements met, etc.] from filing the petition to adopt to final order of adoption is about 90 days.

   A private adoption can really vary in length of time. It really depends on whether the mother is still pregnant and how far along she is– or — if the baby is already here. A home assessment by a licensed agency is required before you can adopt. And you may be required to pay for medical and living expenses of the mother while she is pregnant with the child.
