THE KING OF WESTERN SWING AT HIS BEST …I DIG THE STEEL GUITAR …

Yes, he is singing in a loud projecting voice, then goes to almost a whisper for ” ’bout you”, then back to full voice. I didn’t hear it the first time; turn your volume up high and you can hear it. Probably something he would have done live or with a radio microphone on occasion, but this recording didn’t pick up very well.
King of Western Swing
The 3:15, at least, sounded like his voice went too low to register in the extant scratchy recording. Would hanging a mic from up top not work?
I play this music & sing without a mic at rehearsals, if the band is well balanced, which these guys were, you don’t need amplification, especially the fiddle. It’s difficult for people today to understand this as electricity has changed the way bands arrange themselves. But back then you chose an instrument to set your volume off. We set everything to the piano.
This is not lip-synched. The Snader Telescriptions were filmed / recorded live for early television, unlike the earlier Panoram Soundies which were synched to a pre-recorded track. The microphones are overhead out of camera range. At 3:15 Bob is saying “I don’t worry ’bout you”, the ” ’bout you” part is just more subtle, almost an afterthought. And Bobby Koeffer does not have to look at what his hands are doing because he is a master at the non-pedal steel guitar. Still is, actually.

why would they have to lip sync? maybe they are…but this is arguably the greatest live band ever, they played live almost everyday and night for years on radio shows, dances and recording sessions. the drums arent loud because he’s actually playing them, not beating them to death. and a good steel guitar player like bobby koeffer doesnt have to look where to go when he switches necks, he just does it
Playing by ear doesn’t work that way. You need to wiggle the slide around to find the pitch, that’s what playing by ear means. And he doesn’t do that.
Not looking down in any way doesn’t make sense. It’s a trick just for the camera, and it works because he recorded the part in a studio away from the camera, when he could look at the neck.
Seems like a lot of people are missing that this is lip syncing. Nobody here is playing live.
Right? I mean, why is Bob’s vocal at 3:15 dead silent? Why no microphones on camera, and how are they getting the vocal louder than the drums without singing right into the mic? How is the lap steel switching necks without either looking down or finding the note by ear?
exactly my thoughts, almost like he’s high on something.
The ‘Yellow Rose’ was what was a ‘High Yellow’…a negress with a very light complextion. Most likey about 1/4 or 1/2 white.
What are you talking about? I hear nothing ****** in this song.
Around 1:32, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen Bobby Koeffer play anything other than that four neck Fender. Obviously this double neck has more than a few hours on it, look at the wear pattern from his right hand! Bobby was something else!
so it’s ****** to perform an african spiritual if you are not of african descent?
That’s what I’m wondering too?
1.-copy and paste
2.-paste it in 2 different videos
3.. hold breath for 10 secs
4.- look at your hands
classic
Western Swing is Jazz. It has a little bit of everything in it.
Funny that talk of “racisism” should arise here. Bob Wills is said to have been a man who found black women particularly attractive.
(“Yellow Rose of Texas” and all that ….)
Has anyone else heard this?
great recording.
It had some lyrics that were not the traditional ones.
Um what? What did Wills and his band do that’s ****** in this video?
I just lost all respect for the Bob Wills band. I know it was a different time, but such blatant racism from musicians…man I don’t what to say. I’m saddend and angered at the same time.
I love this halarious and totally useless banter. Please do carry on. I’ve nothing better to do…
every body chill ! if you don’t like the video there’s a little X in the corner of the screen that makes it STOP
