In this clip, from a 1940’s B Western, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, on stage to entertain the locals, are introduced by Tex Ritter. The King of Western Swing then launches into a rendition of his classic ‘Lone Star Rag.’ “They’re good, aren’t they?” Tex Ritter responds, “Best in the West.” Too right, too right. Truer words were never spoken.
Well, they were one of the first bands to use the electric guitar, so that’s not quite true…
I love Bob Wills so much! Leon and his bakelite “Rickenbacker” really great!
Ahhh Haaaaa! Mucho Gusto! Viva Senor Bob Wills!
im all for that, but buddy on the left is playing a lapsteel…
“Best in the west!” Said by Tex Ritter, John Ritter’s dad!
The lefty fiddle player “Joe Holley” is my grandpa..
That isn’t Gene Cronover, is it? I played with him.
Bob Wills is still the king!
The guy on the left with thelittleguitar thing in his lap ismy great grandfather!!
these guys did not **** around…
yeah that marijuana thing is pretty random… lol
You gotta give these guys a lot of credit by making music without ANY electronics. Pure music, I tell ya!!
Sure as ****…about 1:35 listen close. You hear “Marijuana!”
Kind of odd for this time period, but some were tokin’ it up back then.
omfg lol that’s so funny!!! s
I never know how to take Bob wills -these old clips are great they give another dimension to my music collection. One minute you think hes a serious musician next moment he’s doing his silly jig and always with that inane grin on his face- too bad he missed out on playing the Joker in Batman!.Thanks for the post. Jim.
Bob Wills could make you laugh; cry, or dance…all within 5 minutes of ea. other! I saw some of the Playboys, incl. Johnny Gimble, as the house band for “Best Lil’ Whorehouse in Texas”, around ‘79. The band was as good as the play.
no disrespect to Bob Wills here, but at the very end of the clip it sure sounds like that bearded guy is hollering “Marijuana”
sitting, with the steel in his lap
Aint that the truth.
“Bob Wills is still the King.”
Which one is Leon Mcauliffe?
I mean left! Sorry!
That’s my great uncle on the right! He played with Bob Wills when they were the ArnspigerWills band and The Doughboys. It’s so exciting to see this clip!!! I have to show my dad!
HA! I never thought of it like that…lol
