Adoption in Kansas…?

I’m living in KS now but I’m from TN. I know in TN you can go through the state I believe for adoption and you don’t have a pay the thousands on line pharmacy of dollars like you would if it were through an attorney/adoption agency. I don’t know if anyone knows how adoptions work in KS. I really want to adopt someday and I just want to feel everything out and see how it works. Thanks!

You’re correct – every state has children available for adoption through foster care. Contact your state’s Dept of Human Services or Dept of Children & Family Services. They go by different names. In the entire country there are almost 150,000 children available for adoption right now. The cost is minimal if anything. There is assistance with the homestudy cost & legal fees. Plus there are tax credits of up to $10,500 of adoption costs that can be taken over 5 years.
As an adoptee, I can tell you that Kansas and Alaska are the two states that have always had unsealed original birth certificates.
Several other states (Tennessee included) have since restored their laws to make those documents available for adult adoptees, & many more are moving in a more humane direction as well. That is an aspect that is very important to your future child.
In the meantime, I would recommend using this time to learn everything you can about the needs of adopted children so when the times comes you will be the best adoptive parent possible. You are doing the right thing by going through the state rather than adoption agencies, which profit disgraceful sums of cash off of every child placed (about $30k) and sometimes exploit the natural families in order to procure those babies.

I’m from Illinois, and my family has adopted two children – one through an attorney and one through the state (foster care). Eventually, it ended up costing roughly the same. The adoption through an attorney is probably more secure, because the mother is willingly giving her child for adoption, and after six months, that child is completely yours. States cannot promise that.
One other thing to look into is insurance. My parents policy pays for adoptions just like they would pay hospital fees for a natural birth. You might check with your insurance provider to see if this is an option.
